On Oct. 6, 2020, the Kamloops RCMP Detachment received a complaint regarding a domestic violence incident involving a 24-year-old Kamloops man who had just been released from prison. He was instructed to report to Vision Quest upon release, which he did not do, and a failure to comply charge was sought for this reason.

On Oct. 6, the man allegedly physically assaulted a 25-year-old woman and caused her bodily harm. He is also suspected of having sexually assaulted her, of having confined her and of having threatened her. At the time of the complaint, the victim was not with the suspect, and the police were looking for him.

On Oct. 7, 2020, at around 1.15 a.m., police were required to proceed to Sector 1,200 of Monashee Court Road as the suspect allegedly located and assaulted his previous victim again. When police arrived at the scene, the suspect fled in a vehicle. He allegedly pushed his way through the police cars and rolled over lawns. During this maneuver, a rear tire of the suspect’s vehicle allegedly suffered a puncture, but the suspect continued on his way.

Other Kamloops police units located the suspect as he was driving north on 3rd Avenue and followed him into Sector 300 Tranquil Road. While trying to escape, the suspect would have driven dangerously, in a vehicle running on one, then two rims following the puncture of the rear tires, and he would have headed towards the officers on the spot, who had to perform maneuvers avoidance so as not to be injured.

Once the vehicle was stopped, the suspect reportedly resisted arrest, defying officers and refusing to surrender. At one point, he allegedly brandished a hatchet at the officers. To get the man into custody without injuring him, they had to use a conducted energy weapon (CEW), also called a Taser.

It was certainly a very risky incident involving a dangerous and violent offender who had absolutely no concern for the safety of the public or the police, said Staff Sergeant Mat Van Laer of the RCMP Detachment. of Kamloops. In addition to the serious assault he inflicted on the victim, we were informed that this individual may have carried a firearm. We have done everything to try to arrest this person in the least risky way for the public; in particular we have used a studded carpet with success, he added. Our officers really put themselves at risk to protect the public in this matter, and I am very grateful that none of them suffered serious injuries.

Van Laer said he would also like to thank those who were touched by the chaotic scene that took place on Tranquille Road earlier today.

The Kamloops RCMP is asking anyone in the area at the time of the incident who passed the suspect’s vehicle to contact them by dialing 250 828 3000.
