In a media release Tuesday, the Regional District of Kootenay Boundary Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) said it has rescinded evacuation orders for about 171 addresses in the Downtown and North Ruckle areas due to a decreased threat of flooding.

However, the EOC said these properties, like all properties taken off evacuation order, remain on evacuation alert.

“Although the evacuation order has been lifted in the downtown area, residents are asked to respect barricades and road closure signage and access their homes by foot if necessary to allow crews space to remove temporary flood control structures,” the RDKB EOC said.

“There are currently about 12 addresses that remain on evacuation order due to geomorphic hazards such as slope instability.”

The RDKB EOC said residents returning home will see colour-coded placards attached to their doors with these placards are a result of Rapid Damage Assessments and provide information about what needs to be addressed going forward.

Those looking to apply for Disaster Financial Assistance can do so at the Red Cross Reception Centre at the Grand Forks Curling Club (7320 – 21 street).

Clean-up kits and re-entry packages with information on flood clean-up are also available at the Red Cross Reception Centre. The location of clean-up kits may change – contact the RDKB Emergency Program for the latest information at 1-888-747-9119.

Important Safety Information

It is extremely important to be safe when near floodwater. River levels can rise quickly and currents can be unpredictable. The ground can be soft and unstable causing extremely poor footing. Exercise extreme caution.

Anyone whose home is on a riverbank and who is concerned about riverbank stability should stay clear and report concerns to the Emergency Operations Centre.

The contact for the Emergency Operations Centre is 1-888-747-9119.
