Three reports offered city council at its regular meeting Tuesday night mean great news for Castlegar’s commercial community.

The reports, presented by director of planning and development Phil Markin, request development permits and a zoning amendment to allow for two huge expansions and a brand-new car dealership.

Mitchell Supply Ltd, at 490 13 Ave., is requesting a development permit to add an 880-square-foot addition, while the Kalawsky Group is requesting a development permit to construct a 6,368-square-foot Kia sales and service facility at 1665 Columbia Ave. At the same time, Kootenay Market, at 1100 6th Street, is looking for a zoning amendment to allow for a 5,446-square-foot addition.

Councillor Kevin Chernoff, who also serves as chair of council’s planning and development committee, said these projects will account for millions of dollars of new construction, an increased commercial tax base for the city, and untold economic spin-off for the community.

“I think this it’s great for the city, especially coupled with the Fortis project (a proposed $16-million operations centre in Ootischenia),” Chernoff said. “This bodes very well for our economy.”

Chernoff said the Mitchell Supply and Kalawsky requests will go to the variance board, who will return to council with recommendations, while there will be a public meeting on Sept. 27 from 6 – 7 p.m. regarding Kootenay Market’s zoning amendment request.
