Rossland man Mark Gayowski was found, safe and sound, at about 5:00 pm on Wednesday, January 1, 2020, having survived nearly days in the bush after going astray during what had been intended as an afternoon ski.

A message from Mike Hudson, of South Columbia Search and Rescue,

“We are very happy to report that Mark Gayowski has been found. He was found in very good health, and happy to see our teams. Mark was airlifted out of the backcountry and brought to our location at Red Mountain where he went for medical care as a precaution.

“Amazing response from both the East and West Kootenay teams. We had aprox 90 Sar members searching over 3 days through heavy snowfall conditions, cold, freezing rain and horrific and challenging conditions and terrain.

“We would like to thank all the teams involved, Rossland, Castlegar, Nelson, Kaslo, Grand Forks, Kimberly and Cranbrook Sar. Fantastic work and help from Trail Rcmp, Dam Helicopters and a HUGE thank you to Red Mountain, their staff, patrol members and all the fantastic restaurant staff. They generously donated all the food for our searchers over the last 3 days. We are so very humbled by their gesture.”

Original story:

Trail and Greater District RCMP has activated Search and Rescue crews in the ongoing search for a missing Rossland resident at Red Mountain Ski Resort.

On December 30, 2019 at approximately 5 p.m., Trail and Greater District RCMP received a report of an overdue skier. Mark Gayowski, a Rossland area resident, had been missing for several hours after failing to return from a run on the backside of Red Mountain. An initial search in the area was limited, due to darkness, dangerous terrain and heavy snow fall conditions.

Mark Anthony Gayowski is described as a Caucasian male, 34 years of age, who stands about 6 feet tall and weighs approximately 209 pounds. He was last seen wearing a light blue ski jacket, a pair of black ski pants, a brown toque and ski goggles.

The ground search has resumed early this morning, with snowmobiles and ski teams. Current weather conditions continue to hamper search efforts.  South Columbia Search and Rescue has issued a plea to the public for information.

Anyone with information on the whereabouts of Mark Gayowski is urged to contact Search and Rescue volunteers or Trail and Greater District RCMP.
