Weekly Columbia Avenue Update

City of Castlegar

April 2nd, 2021

Over the last week, construction has continued to progress quickly, and they are nearly finished in the area between 18th and 21st and will soon start working in the zone between 21st and 24th. In the next week, you will expect to see:

  • No work over the long weekend. The construction area is getting cleaned and trench patches paved, and the traffic area will open up slightly.
  • Water main tie-ins to existing City infrastructure and testing (from 21st Street to the Highway 3 ramp across from the Chevron). This will require water disruptions for businesses that will be communicated and coordinated ahead of time.
  • Continued clearing of the construction zone between 21st and 24th.
  • Single lane alternating traffic as work starts to proceed southward into a narrower part of Columbia Avenue.

Traffic

Copcan will continue to use single lane alternating traffic when needed between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. The busiest times for traffic continue to be from 11 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. and 3 to 4:30 p.m. so please give yourself more time if travelling during these periods. Traffic controllers are working very hard to keep traffic flowing and reduce congestion. If you are having problems accessing or finding your way though construction, stop, signal where you are trying to go, and talk to a flagger if you need more help.

Starting April 12, a detour for northbound traffic on Columbia Avenue will be detoured onto 6th Avenue between 20th and 24th Street. Southbound traffic will remain on Columbia Avenue. After careful consideration it was determined that it was the best option, as it will permit construction to proceed quickly and eliminate the need for single lane alternating traffic during that time. Affected businesses and residents have been contacted, and more details will be issued to the community next week.

Next week, Copcan may start removing the sidewalk between 21st and 24th,. Alternate walking routes will be posted.

BC Transit stops at the Sandman Hotel and Canadian Tire will remain out of service. Passengers can board the bus at the Castlegar & District Recreation Complex on 6th Avenue.

Did you know?

  • Abandoned (not in-use) wood-stave pipe has been found in the construction zone. This type of pipe is made from wood like a barrel and was installed in cities as late as the 1950s, before plastic piping was economical.
