Smoke funnelling into Castlegar is most likely from an almost 2,000-hectare wild fire near Galena Bay in the Regional District of Central Kootenay, as well as another, of almost 8,000 hectares, on Terrace Mountain in the Central Okanagan, according to the Southeast Fire Centre.
The Galena Bay fire was caused by lightning, while the Terrace Mountain blaze was human-caused and is still under investigation.
The provincial wildfire management authority is reporting the Galena Bay burn is being impacted by high heat and strong winds, and is “zero per cent contained”, while they assert 40 per cent containment on Terrace Mountain.

Meanwhile, two fires in Ootischenia kept fire crews busy Friday afternoon, when downed power lines sparked one blaze at the bottom of airport hill and another in the mobile home park near Brilliant Bridge.
Crews from Castlegar, Ootischenia and the B.C. Forest Service attended, and both were extinguished without incident. No damage was caused to persons or property.
