Air Canada Jazz will be cancelling its weekday afternoon flights to Vancouver from the West Kootenay Regional airport in Castlegar for the month of January.

City councillor and chair of the transportation and civic works committee Russ Hearne said the cancellation is not a harbinger of worse things to come.

“It’s only for the month of January – that’s their lowest ridership month in comparison to the rest of the year, and it’s when cancelllations are highest due to weather and limited daylight hours.

“I don’t think there’s anything long-term to read into it.”

Airport manager Shawn Sutherland agreed.

“They do cancellations every year – the only difference this year may have to do with traffic restrictions due to the (2010 Olympics),” he said. “Either way, it’s not out of the ordinary.

“There will still be the morning flights as well as afternoon flights on the weekends – ample service to Vancouver,” he added.
