The deadline for submitting your input for consideration as School District 20 attempts to “Plan for the Future” is now Feb. 28.

Original SD 20 proposals, set out in the document Planning for the Future, have come under fire  recently as residents object to potential school closures across the district (including Castlegar Primary School) and the prospect of folding Grade 7 into the high school population here in Castlegar.

The district invited input from the public, with superintendent Jean Borsa offering the challenge, “If not this, then what?”, through a variety of venues including public meetings as well as email submissions to be posted on the district website.

Almost 100 submissions have already been received and posted, with the SD 20 board of education expecting more to come, as evidenced by the pushing back of the submission deadline to the end of February.

Original proposals included closing submission receipt as early as the end of January.

Borsa also noted that this will not be the final opportunity for locals to weigh in, as there will be another round of public consultations when the board presents its draft plan to the region.

“There’s lots of scenarios, lots of informaiton to sift through before we reach that stage, though,” she said, adding the board has not yet set a timeline for completing the draft plan.

Once that is done, however, she said legislation requires that any school closures be given six months for public input before being finalized and implemented, reducing the likelihood closures will be in effect by the start of the upcoming school year.
