NDP MP Alex Atamanenko is calling for an immediate independent investigation into the horrendous attack by Israeli Defence Forces against the Freedom Flotilla carrying humanitarian aid to Gaza.

“This deadly assault on peace activists who were providing very much needed aid to the people of Gaza is simply, not acceptable in a civilized world”, he said. “The Government of Canada must be clear in its condemnation of this action against innocent people”.

Atamanenko said that it is time to end the blockade which has created havoc for the people of Gaza.

“My colleague, Libby Davies, MP – Vancouver –Kingsway witnessed firsthand during her visit to Gaza in 2009, the devastation this blockade has had on the 1.6 million inhabitants of this area. According to the UN Relief Works Agency (UNRWA), the number of refugees living in extreme poverty has tripled since 2007. The private sector has collapses and 42 er cent of Gaza’s residents are out of work.

Atamanenko has written the Minister of Foreign Affairs asking him to support an independent investigation of this tragedy as well as calling for a lifting of the Gaza blockade.
