BC Hydro is inviting the Castlegar public to an information meeting on Sept. 14, during which they’ll provide an update on the spillway gate upgrade project and the fall maintenance schedule for the Hugh Keenleyside Dam.

“Information presented will include the project schedules, timelines and anticipated temporary construction-related road closures,” said stakeholder engagement advisor Mary Anne Coules. The metting will be held in the Sandman Hotel’s Columbia Room from 6 to 8 p.m.   She said this phase of the spillway gate upgrade will run from Sept. 27 to Oct. 28, while maintenance on the navigational lock will run from Oct. 3 to Oct. 23. Both projects will necessitate road closures, including the road over the Hugh Keenleyside Dam being closed to the public from 6:30 a.m. on Sept. 27 to 6:30 a.m. on Oct. 28.   “We will keep you informed through project updates, newspaper and radio advertisements, and road signs,” Coules said, adding she believes this will be the last construction work at the dam this year. “Up-to-date information is also available by calling our toll-free number (at) 1-877-924-2444.”   Coules said the spillway gate work is part of a project that should be complete by December 2013.   “To achieve BC Hydro’s reliability principles, the Hugh Keenleyside Dam site will require a combination of replacement, refurbishment, and the addition of new equipment on the spillway and low-level outlet gates,” she said. “The scope of work includes upgrading the mechanical components, electrical power systems and the protection and control systems at the facility.   “Execution of this work at the Hugh Keenleyside Dam will enhance BC Hydro’s ability to safely manage flood waters and will help to accurately and consistently maintain the flow requirements of the approved Water Licence for the Columbia River at the Hugh Keenleyside Dam. All project work will take place within the terms of the Columbia Water Use Plan.”
