A fire in the isolation room on the third floor of Kootenay Lake Hospital has sent one person into police custody under the suspicion of arson.

Nelson Fire Department firefighters and hospital staff managed to contain the fire that broke out in the room occupied by one person at the time.

The lone occupant of the room — a 34-year-old female, a patient at the hospital at the time — was removed from the room by hospital staff and taken into police custody, said fire chief Simon Grypma.

The women is currently under investigation for arson, said NPD Sgt. J. Scott-Pryke.

No injuries were reported and damage is estimated at $2,000.

“A fire investigation is under way by the Nelson Fire Department and Nelson Police Department investigators along with hospital staff to determine the cause and circumstances surrounding the fire,” he said.

As a result of the fire the hospital evacuation plan was activated and the appropriate level of evacuation was initiated, said Grypma.
