If you are looking to get picked up after the Saturday night rooftop Queen City Cruise dance, look no further.

Kootenay Insurance Services has a ride for you. Nicknamed the KIS free ride, it’s a free taxi ride offered from 6 p.m. to 3 a.m., before and after the dance.

The free ride ticket is the bottom portion of the dance ticket, giving the holder a free taxi ride anywhere within three miles in the city.

Being in the insurance business, and the auto insurance business, made it an easy fit to partner with the Road Kings on the dance, as well as Glacier Cabs, said KIS branch manager Hilda Jarratt.

In trying to figure out how to add and enhance the event, as well as encourage people to come back, Jarratt said they came up with the free ride idea.

“This was one way to make the event a good party without people having to worry about how they are getting home afterwards,” she said. “The culture needs to change to reflect the fact that drinking and driving don’t mix.”

The idea comes with a $2,500 price tag for the ride, as well as a contribution from Glacier Cabs.

KIS will have a big presence on the day before the free ride. They also host a booth on Baker Street that has the popular roll over simulator, manned by the Nelson Police Department and the RCMP.

The KIS booth will be sprouting prizes, including T-shirts, all that can be won through the answering of road safety questions.

And you can get your vision checked through vision goggles that simulate having a few glasses of wine.

“Our booth should be a lot of fun this year,” Jarratt said.
