Nelson’s favourite ski destination now has a twin across the U.S. border.

Whitewater Ski Resort recently adopted Schweitzer Mountain Resort — located in the rugged Selkirk Mountains of the northern Idaho panhandle — as its sister resort.

Pass holders at each resort will now receive discounts at their sister mountain.

Schweitzer and Whitewater are located less than 240 kilometers apart, making the typical drive time around three hours, depending on road conditions and border traffic.

In addition, the city of Sandpoint, ID and Nelson have had recent conversations about the possibility of a town partnership.

Whitewater’s season pass holders will ski free when booking lodging at Schweitzer’s White Pine Lodge, Selkirk Lodge, or condos when they use a special promo code. Schweitzer’s winter season pass holders will receive 50 per cent off lift tickets at Whitewater, making the adult day ticket price $31.25.

“The similar core values of each resort along with the resemblance between Nelson and Sandpoint made it an easy decision to become partners,” said Anne Pigeon, Whitewater’s general manager of indoor operations and marketing.

Both resorts will be attending ski shows in Calgary, Toronto, and Seattle this fall. Schweitzer will also be at the Boston, Portland and Minneapolis shows while Whitewater will be at the Vancouver and Denver show.

About Whitewater Ski Resort

Quietly legendary for its incomparable vibe, as of the 2010/11 season, Whitewater has gotten even better.

Last season saw the opening of the new Glory Ridge chair, rising 2,044 vertical feet and nearly doubling the size of the North America’s biggest little resort.

Located on the Powder Highway, it is just a 15-minute drive from Nelson, a city that features over 40 restaurants, an abundance of accommodations, hot springs, cat and heli-skiing, and a winter vibe second to none.

About Schweitzer Mountain Resort

Schweitzer Mountain Resort is a playground in both winter and summer.

The changing seasons brings with it a renewed sense of adventure. Trusty skis are replaced by go-anywhere mountain bikes, powder chutes become hiking trails and winter whites become summer greens.

Located in the rugged Selkirk Mountains of the northern Idaho panhandle and the northwest Rocky Mountains, Schweitzer overlooks the town of Sandpoint and Lake Pend Oreille.
