If you are a parent in the process of helping your child plan his or her post-secondary education, there has been a recent report giving high praise to Canadian community colleges for their ability to effectively deliver programs and get people on the fast track to rewarding careers.

The Hechinger Report, an American non-profit news organization focused on producing in-depth education journalism, says students at Canadian community colleges complete their credentials at a rate more than double that of many other developed countries, and 9 times out of 10 community college students in Canada get jobs in their chosen fields within six months of graduating.

Selkirk College is now offering a series of Parent Information Sessions and Education Fairs throughout the region in March and April, 2012, to help you make the best decisions for your child’s future career and employment goals. Parents of children in Grades 9 – 12, high school students and/or adults looking into post-secondary programs are invited to attend these free events where we will offer a variety of information about Selkirk College programs and services.

Sessions will cover areas such as: programs & courses, the college to university credit transfer system, counseling & academic advising, financial aid opportunities, admissions, as well as post secondary costs & tuition.

The session will also include a question and answer period along with a mini education fair. The education fairs will offer you the opportunity to talk to program and service representatives from Selkirk College, and all Selkirk schools will have tables with information about what they have to offer.

  • The Castlegar session is on March 7, 2012 from 6:15 to 7:30 pm at our Castlegar campus. The Selkirk Career, Job and Education Fair will precede the Information Session from 11:00 am to 6:00 pm.
  • The Trail session is on April 3, 2012 from 6:30 to 7:30 pm at our Trail campus with the Mini Education Fair to follow from 7:30 to 8:00 p.m.
  • The Nelson session is on April 17 from 6:30 to 7:30 pm, with another Mini Education Fair to follow from 7:30 to 8:00 pm.
