RCMP said downtown Kimberley was hit with a major fire Friday afternoon.

Kimberley RCMP reported the fire started at approximately 5:45 p.m. and was contained to the building housing Kootenay Cycle Works.

RCMP said the brick structure is still standing but the inside has been totally gutted while an adjacent business The Gilded Goat, has only sustained smoke and water damage.

Nearby businesses and restaurants were also evacuated, while police directed traffic around the area.

Police say the owner of Kootenay Cycle Works was present at the time the fire broke out, but did not release further details, noting an investigation is under way.
