Kootenay Co-op gives WKRD short-term opportunity
The new location of the Kootenay Co-op is going to the ladies until further notice.
West Kootenay Roller Derby is taking over the site until the Kootenay Co-op Renovation Committee is ready to proceed with the new store.
“Kootenay Co-op: Natural Organic Foods & Products has generously lent WKRD the use of their building (the old Extra Foods building on Vernon Street),” said Teressa Hodsall of the WKRD.
“The building is to be either torn down or renovated in the future, but until then it’s going to act as the “Derby Mecca” of the West Kootenays,” Hodsall added.
Hodsall said to bring the site up to roller derby standards organizers are in need of donations.
Some of the items include 1/8 thick vinyl composite tile, paint and brushes, seating (chairs, couches, benches etc.) and rugs.
“The space is in need of some repair and we’re rolling our sleeves up to do it,” Hodsall said.
“If you’re interested in helping out our not-for-profit organization give us a shout, we’d love to have you.”
Items can be dropped off at 708 Vernon Street Fridays from 7-9 p.m. and Saturday from noon until 3 p.m.
To lay tile the committee needs the use of army tents or any tent-like apparatus that can contain heat. The floor needs to be at room temperature for two days prior to tile installation. Currently the floor is 4 Celsius.
The West Kootenay Roller Derby has teams from Nelson, Trail, Rossland, Salmo and the Slocan Valley.
The league trains most of the winter before playing games from spring until the league concludes in early September.
