Quick response from volunteer fire departments and Nelson firefighters helped save a house on Middle Road, six miles north of Nelson early Tuesday morning.

Fire crews from North Shore and Balfour along with a water hauling truck from Nelson attended the house fire at 3140 Middle Road Tuesday.

“The call came in at 1 a.m.,” said North Shore Fire Chief Fred Schneider. “The fire started as a chimney fire but quickly turned into a structural fire.”

Schneider said more than 20 firefighters, two engines and four water haulers responded to the fire.

Schneider said the home owner reported the fire in the chimney but when he arrived thought the blaze quickly made its way into the attic.

The crews managed to contain the fire to the top floor of the two-story structure but there was considerable water damage.

“We managed to save the main floor,” Schneider explained.

Crews remained at the scene for approximately five hours before the fire was completely extinguished.

No one was hurt during the incident.
