It must be the Victoria Day long weekend.

Why else would the weather change?

Despite the threat of inclement weather for the unofficial first long weekend of summer, there are still a few hotspots for a West Kootenay Staycation at the May Day celebrations in Kaslo or New Denver.

Both celebrations have been around for more than 100 years — Kaslo 120 and New Denver 106 years young.

New Denver kicked off the celebrations Thursday with the Queen’s Pageant.

Some of the events in New Denver include a fishing derby, soap box race, golf tournament, bike rodeo, kids soccer games, beach volleyball tournament and the traditional pancake breakfast Sunday morning.

The parade goes Monday at 10 a.m.

A few kilometers to the north is the Kaslo May Days.

The public is welcome to attend North America’s longest running May Day Pole Dance — since 1923 — in Vimy Park at the Gazebo.

There’s also the now two-day Logger sports competition Saturday and Sunday from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., the show ‘n’ shine antique car show, Roller Derby Saturday hosted by the Valley Vendettas at the Arena from 6-8 p.m., Skate Park Jam Sunday, a Horse Demonstration, the slo-pitch ball tournament and the May Day Parade on Victoria Day Monday.
