After getting beat up a lot during the expansion season the Nelson Killjoys went from rags to riches en route to clinching the 2013 West Kootenay Roller Derby Championship with a convincing 244-130 victory over Salmo’s Babe of Brutality at the Rossland Arena.

Nelson built up a 130-70 halftime advantage before coasting to the title in the second half.

“(Our) focus this season has been our teamwork . . . rather than just building on our individual skills, we wanted to practice hard to that our talents and strengths on the track complimented each others,” said team spokesperson Nicole C.

“We have an incredibly deep bench and this gives us an edge competitively, so we wanted to develop that edge.”

The Killjoys are a shadow of the team that entered the league in 2010.

In the past six months the team received an influx of new players that help power the team over the top.

“This is an amazing testament to blood, sweat, and tears we leave on the track week in and week out, especially for those of us that have been working towards this for three years,” Nicole C explained.

The other teams in the league include Rossland/Trail Roller Girls, Dam City Rollers of Castlegar and Slocan Valley Vendettas.
