A hearing to determine whether Randall Hopley is a dangerous offender beings in Cranbrook Monday.

Hopley pleaded guilty to kidnapping a young Sparwood boy — Kienan Hebert  — from his home before returning him safely home after a massive manhunt two years ago.

He held Hebert in a cabin for a days before returning him unharmed to his family home.

Hopley, 47, was later arrested near the B.C.-Alberta border in September 2011.

Hopley has spent the last two years in protective custody in Kamloops and a psychiatric assessment to determine whether he should be declared a dangerous offender has been completed.

Hopley has violently assaulted children in other incidents.

The Crown is expected to argue Hopley be declared a dangerous offender.

A week has been set aside for the hearing.
