NPD warn public of computer phone scam making the rounds

Nelson Police is once again sending out a warning to consumers about a phone scam making its way through the Heritage City — this time using computers as its hook to reel in the public.
Nelson Police Department Sergeant Janet Scott-Pryke said in a media release the victim receives a call reading “out of the area” on the call display.
The victim is advised that they were speaking to software expert who had identified problems with their computers.
Sergeant Scott-Pryke said the victim making the report to NPD was asked to boot up computers so the caller could install a program to repair the problems.
“The caller then asks for a Credit Card # so a bill can be submitted for the so-called repairs, or in this case the caller asked for the victim to go to Western Union and send the money,” Sergeant Scott-Pryke explains.
Nelson Police caution people against giving out personal information by email or over the phone.
“Please ensure that the company or person you are dealing with is a reputable service provider before providing any information,” Sergeant Scott-Pryke said. “Report any suspicious circumstances to police immediately.”
