The Source/Champion are going to throw objectivity to the wind, and admit how delighted we are to introduce the newest member of our team, 21-year-old Tayla Scott.

She’ll be serving a six-week internship, doing everything from writing to photography to new media management, and will cover a wide variety of topics, from community events to city council to the police beat.

Scott comes to us from Thompson Rivers University (TRU) in Kamloops, where she just completed her third year in a New Media, Communications and Journalism Degree – but she’s always been one of our own.

“I grew up in Fruitvale, and graduated from J.L. Crowe in 2011,” she said, adding she then graduated with honours from Selkirk College’s two-year Associated Arts program. “My passion is writing and literature – I chose to enter journalism because I needed to take that (passion) in a practical direction for a career.”

Scott said she loves the area, and was happy to come back to her family home to do her internship, given the ties to her past here – but choosing an online news outlet rather than a print publication was a decision predicated on her future.

“The world is heading toward online,” she said. “Especially after seeing the Kamloops Daily News close its doors, I can see my future with online more than I can see myself at a print publication.”

She added that she’s already worked with Source/Champion editor Kyra Hoggan, having been published in The Source while still at Selkirk, and felt it would be a strong, productive working releationship.

For her part, Hoggan says she’s thrilled to have Scott on board.

“In my experience,  interns gain a great deal of knowledge in these sort of placements – but end up teaching as much, if not more, as they learn,” Hoggan said. “Someone with Tayla’s enthusiasm, professionalism and energy is sure to inject new life and excitement into our publications (which also include The Nelson Daily, Rossland Telegraph and Boundary Sentinel).”

Scott’s former editor at the TRU Omega, Mike Davies, concurred with Hoggan’s assessment.

“Tayla took on articles for The Omega with all the enthusiasm of one excited to be honing her craft, and they all turned into pieces that she can be proud of,” Davies said. “I have full confidence that she will develop into an excellent journalist.”

We’re convinced the area will do its utmost to welcome Scott to the Source/Champion team, and back to her home stomping grounds, in the six weeks to come.

Best of luck, Tayla!
