UPDATED: No foul play suspected in death of 52-year-old man found in Cottonwood Creek

Nelson Police are cautioning the public to stay away from fast moving creeks and rivers in the region after a body was found Thursday morning in Cottonwood Creek.

Sergeant Dino Falcone told The Nelson Daily Friday Nelson Police and BC Coroners Service are continuing to investigate the death of the male, a 52-year-old person of no fixed address.

“What I can say now is to caution the public to stay away from fast moving streams, rivers or lakes,” Falcone said.

“Banks are not very stable and if today’s weather with rain is an indicaton of how wet its going to get, I’d advise the public to stay away from any fast moving rivers or streams.”

The body of a man was found in the fast-moving creek which flows throw Cottonwood Park early Thursday morning.

Nelson Police responded quickly and closed down the park during the initial part of the investigation.

Nelson Fire Department, BC Ambulance and Nelson Search and Rescue were called, the latter to scan the river.

The BC Coroners Service also attended the scene.

Cottonwood Park was re-opened Thursday afternoon.

“What I can say is foul play is not being suspected at this time,” Falcone explained. “The investigation is still ongoing (we believe) there is a possibility of this being a miss-adventure but we’re still investigating at this time.”

Falcone said police has contacted the next of kin of the 53-year-old man.

Release of any addition information will be done through the BC Coroners Service.

This is the second body to be found in Cottonwood Creek in just over a year.

In the spring of 2013, a man was found near the mouth of Cottonwood creek adjacent the City of Nelson Public Works Yard near the Regional District of Central Kootenay Transfer Station.

No foul play was suspected in that death.
