The Southeast Fire Centre was inundated with calls Sunday after smoke could be seen billowing up over the mountains to the west of Nelson near the Slocan Valley.

The smoke is coming from the Slocan Park fire, located 2.5 kilometers northwest of Highway 6 in the Slocan Valley.

“The fire started Sunday morning and we’ve had crews working on the fire all day,” said Southeast Fire Information Officer Jordan Turner Sunday, adding there had been numerous calls fielded from the Nelson area.

“This fire is a priority for us. We’ve had air support on the fire and have bucketed it all day with helicopters.”

Turner said the main fire is four hectares in side with a smaller fire listed as .6 of a hectare. Both fires are between Arvid and Jacob Creeks.

Turner said there have been 60 new lightning-caused fires in the Southeast Fire Centre since Friday.

Southeast Fire Centre believe more fires may start from the lightning storms and officials will have spotter planes out frequently patrolling the mountains looking for any smouldering starts.

Anyone seeing a fire or an unattended campfire, call 1 800 663-5555 toll- free or *5555 on a cellphone.
