UPDATED: Coroner releases name of hiking fatality

The BC Coroners Service has confirmed the identity of a man who died following a hiking incident near Silverton on Aug. 29.
He was Nicholas Ioan Llewelyn-Smith, aged 31, from the Orara Valley, New South Wales, Australia.
Llewelyn-Smith was camping with several friends at the Bannock Point campground south of Silverton on the shore of Slocan Lake.
In the early morning hours of Aug. 29, Mr. Llewelyn-Smith and others decided to go for a night hike. While descending a steep slope, Llewelyn-Smith fell from a cliff. He was deceased at the scene.
The BC Coroners Service and RCMP continue to investigate this death.

A young man has died after a hiking incident near Silverton, according to RCMP Sgt. Darryl Little.
“At approximately 1 a.m. on Aug. 29, Emergency Services responded to a report of a missing person at Bannock Point approximately five kilometres south of Silverton,” Little said. “Police, BC Ambulance Service, New Denver Fire/Rescue, and Nelson Search and Rescue attended the scene and discovered that a 30-year-old male had fallen while traversing a trail in the dark near the edge of the bluff.
“Just after daylight, the body of the missing male was located at the bottom of the bluff indicating a fall of approximately 75 metres,” he added. “It was determined the male and a group of friends were camping in the area, when the male, who was wearing a headlamp, decided to go hiking in the dark.
Little said poor lighting, hazardous terrain, and alcohol appear to be contributing factors in this incident.
“The deceased male was determined to be an Australian citizen that was residing in Argenta, BC. The BC Coroner’s Service is continuing their investigation of this incident. The deceased’s name is being withheld at this time pending notification of the next of kin.”
