Nelson Fire Department called to Rosemont to remove bear from tree

Residents in Rosemont, including one home owner that received a rude awakening a few feet from the door to his house, got a surprise Thursday morning when a medium-sized black bear decided to check out the neighbourhood.
Nelson Police dispatch received a call around 7 a.m. from a resident that a bear was prowling around the neighbourhood.
The call came after a resident met the bear head-on during a walk from the house to his vehicle en route to work.
The confrontation spooked the bear into climbing a nearby tree.
Nelson Police along with a Conversation Officer attended the scene in lower Rosemont.
Officers decided to wait to see if the bear would climb down the tree and head off into the forest.
Unfortunately, with more pedestrian traffic frequenting the streets, including children walking to school in and around lower Rosemont, it was decided the best course of action would be to shoot the bear that had become more dependent on garbage than berries.
But when the Conversation Officer shot the bear, the animal remained in the tree having been coiled itself around the branches.
That’s when Nelson Fire Department was called to bring the ladder truck.
With the ladder extended into the tree, firefighters pulled the bear into the extended platform of the ladder before the animal was taken down from the tree and placed into the truck of the conservation officer.
