Whistler RCMP in coordination with Pemberton Search and Rescue have located the bodies of three ice climbers who were reported missing earlier Monday.

A search was started at first light for the ice climbers who had been reported during the night.

“Shortly after the search started three bodies were located approximately 300 meters below the main colour at Joffre peak,” RCMP Sgt. Rob Knapton said in a media release.

“Once the area was determined to be safe, searchers were able to confirm that all three individuals were deceased.”

Whistler RCMP are now conducting an investigation into the deaths in coordination with the BC Coroners Service.

The deceased individuals were part of a group that was recreating in the area.  They consisted of a male and female, both in their mid-30’s from the lower mainland as well as a female international visitor in her late 20’s.

Information at this time suggests that they were experienced in the backcountry.

While it may not have been a factor in this matter, Whistler RCMP would like to remind everyone planning to recreate in the backcountry to do so in a way that minimizes their risk, including:

  • Ensure that you are experienced and equipped for the activities you are undertaking
  • Ensure that you have a plan in place, including someone who can contact authorities and say where you were if you don’t check in
  • Monitor weather and avanlanche conditions and travel in conditions that are within your abilities
