No injuries reported in basement fire at Victoria Street residence
Nelson Assistant Fire Chief Mike Daloise said there were no injuries reported following a house fire in the 800 block of Victoria Street Tuesday morning.
NPD dispatch received a call at 11:33 a.m. Tuesday of a basement fire in the Victoria Street residence.
“Upon arrival of the first crew smoke was observed coming from the basement as well as electrical lines on the ground in the yard,” Daloise said in a media release.
“The first arriving crew’s primary objective was to have the electrical power shut off as it appeared that the fire was probably a result of the damage to the hydro lines.”
Daloise said once Nelson Hydro was able to shut off the power crews were able to enter the building and extinguish the fire.
“All occupants were able to exit the building safely after being alerted to the fire conditions by the smoke alarm in the basement,” Daloise said.
Nelson Fire Rescue responded to the incident with two fire engines, two utility vehicles all on duty members along with four additional off-duty members.
Damage is estimated at $20,000.
Daloise said Nelson Fire Rescue would like to remind the public to stay away from downed electrical lines until determined safe by an electrical utility representative.
