IIO BC to Investigate Fatal Police Involved Motor Vehicle Incident

The Independent Investigation Office of British Columbia (IIO BC) has been called in to investigate a fatal motor vehicle incident involving an off-duty police officer.

Sgt. Annie Linteau, of the BC RCMP Communications said in a media release an RCMP officer traveling in his personal vehicle Tuesday (September 15), at approximately 5 p.m. at the intersection of Fairview Road and Highway 97 in Penticton was involved in a collision with a pedestrian. 

A four-year-old boy was transported to hospital.

The boy has since succumbed to his injuries.

Media reports say the young boy was with his father and brother when he was struck.

IIO BC, established in the Ministry of Justice, is mandated to conduct investigations into officer-related incidents of death or serious harm in order to determine whether or not an officer may have committed an offence.

IIO BC has asserted jurisdiction and anyone with information or who may have witnessed the incident is asked to contact the IIO Toll-free Witness Line at 1-855-446-8477 (TIPS).
