Great start to season for Whitewater Ski Hill

Despite initial predictions for a dry season, conditions at Whitewater this weekend were incredible and bode well for the rest of the winter.

It seemed like the entire town was at the hill on Saturday, with people lining up as early as 8 a.m. to get first chair.

With over 30 cm of “freshies” on top of nearly two metres of pack, the level of snow has already exceeded last year and local skiers and riders could not get enough.

Although the Glory chair has yet to be opened, nobody seemed bothered and snow enthusiasts were packing the Silver King and Summit lifts until close.

Even inside, away from the fun, the lodge was filled with the voices of people of all ages, and the clomp of ski boots could be heard everywhere you went.

The fun carried on Sunday as well, and the snow gods were dumping a huge blessing of the white stuff as exhausted riders climbed into their cars at the end of the day.

Whitewater, with a current base of 170 cm — that’s five-and-a-half feet — received 27 cm in the past 24 hours and 73 cm during the last week as Mother Nature continues to his the region hard with massive amounts of precipitation.

Whitewater will be closed for the remainder of the week as the staff continues to work hard and put the finishing touches on all operations, but will open for the rest of the season this coming weekend.

If your skis still need a tune up or you haven’t purchased a pass yet, there’s still plenty of time.

But make sure to get there next Saturday to enjoy what is shaping up to be an incredible season.
