The Regional District of Central Kootenay continues to deal with landslides in the region as local government officials have now close a section of the Galena Trail near New Denver.

In a media release Monday, the RDCK said parts of the scenic trail has been closed due to a slide.

“A section of the Galena Trail has been closed due to a slide, which occurred at 1.5 kilometres in from the highway yard entrance (300 metres east of Denver Canyon),” the release said.

“The trail is closed from Denver Canyon to the Cable Car (see map).

The Galena Bay trail runs from New Denver to Sandon and is frequently used by residents and tourists.

The RDCK said a 20-metre section of trail has been covered by debris and estimates it could take up to a week to reopen that section of the trail.

“The Regional District of Central Kootenay has hired a geotechnical engineer to assess the area,” said the release.

“The RDCK thanks users for respecting posted signage and staying off the trail until further notice.”
