There are some young people doing a happy dance after making Castlegar proud at a competition in Vernon last month.

The Shine Competition, from April 26 to 29, saw Castlegarians dance their way to six separate awards.

Janaeya Baher won Shine’s Most Promising Dancer Award, which includes a scholarship to Shine’s Workshop next fall.

Isabella Mitchell and Ingrid Ihns were each named as a Shine Top Ten Dancer, and invited to participate in Shine’s Annual Emerging Artist’s Intensive Workshop, also next fall.

Shawna Sloan received Shine’s Mentor Award, which includes a scholarship to Dance Teacher Summit in NYC this summer.

Group “Sweet Dreams” won the Adjudicators Choice Group Award and was invited to perform at Shine’s Annual Charity Showcase in June 2018.

Finally, Turning Pointe Dance won the “Studio Excellence Award” for the Highest Overall Studio Average.

Turning Pointe owner Shawna Sloan was elated, to say the least.

“Such incredibly hard-working dancers with passion for days,” she said. “I am so happy they were rewarded for that. Incredible placings, special awards and overall awards … I’ll say this: We rocked.”
