Thrums collision takes life of 71-year-old South Slocan woman, police asking witnesses to come forward
RCMP West Kootenay Traffic and Castlegar RCMP Detachment attended a head-on collision on Highway 3A on Friday morning, near Thrums, which resulted in one fatality, according to RCMP West Kootenay Traffic Services Sgt. Chad Badry
“On Friday, Feb. 15, at approximately 9:45 a.m., members of the RCMP West Kootenay Traffic Services and Castlegar Detachment attended to a two vehicle head-on collision on Highway 3A near Thrums,” Badry said. “Investigators have completed a preliminary investigation and confirmed that a westbound 2002 Honda Accord occupied by only the driver crossed over the centre line and collided head-on into an eastbound 2012 International tractor trailer unit also occupied by only the driver that was hauling food. Following the collision, both vehicles went over a steep embankment.”
He said the 71 year-old female driver of the Honda, a South Slocan resident, was pronounced dead at the scene, while the 47-year-old male driver of the tractor unit was not seriously injured.
“He was very lucky, it was a very steep embankment,” Badry said.
“The location of the crash made the investigation and recovery difficult resulting in a lengthy highway closure. The RCMP West Kootenay Traffic Services and BC Coroner Services are continuing their investigations into the crash.
“Anyone with information about the collision is asked to call West Kootenay Traffic Services at 250-354-5180.
