A missing Warfield man is home safe and sound after search and rescue crews from around the region scoured the area to find him, according to Mike Hudson, president and manager of South Columbia Search and Rescue

“Yesterday at 2:15 a.m., South Columbia was called out for a missing 58-year-old male,” Hudson said. “He had wondered away from his care home in the Warfield area (and) suffered from a brain injury as well as Autism. The search was considered a high urgency due to our subject’s mental illness and his ongoing medical concerns

“He had gone quite some time without food or water and was not equipped to be outdoors for long periods of time, nor does he have experience. Our team responded quickly and with the help of Rossland SAR and Nelson SAR we put 17 searchers out in the field.”

He said they got more information from police and a tip from a Teck firefighter who had seen the subject the day before, which helped them to focus their efforts.

“In laying out our Search and where and what we would concentrate on first, it corresponded with the tip that came in from the Teck Firefighter and the area we were already looking in. As the search ramped up, we also asked for assistance from Grand Forks and Castlegar SAR, to help assist in our efforts.

“We are happy to report that we were able to locate our missing subject in the lower Warfield area.”

Hudson said the man had sought shelter in a dumpster at A&J Auto beside the Tunnel Pub.

“He was found in good spirits and welcomed SAR members as they made contact with him. We had BC Ambulance attend to do a check on him, (as) he was dehydrated and probably pretty hungry,” Hudson said.

“What a great ending to a Search on Mother’s Day, we had the great pleasure of telling his mother he was found alive and well and we have him under the care of paramedics.

“Thanks to all the SAR members who attended from our neighbouring groups. “
