So-called 'Freedom Rally' organizer from Winlaw fined $2,300 for unlawful event in Castlegar

On Monday, Dec. 21, 2020 a Freedom Rally was held at Millennium Park in Castlegar where between 60 and 80 people gathered to listen to speakers with messaging around COVID-19 related guidelines, measures and enacted laws, according to Castlegar Top Cop RCMP Sgt. Monty Taylor.

Some people later relocated along the 2000 block of Columbia Avenue where they carried signs displayed for passing vehicles and pedestrians.

For the most part, people who participated were calm, but they were in contravention of COVID-19 Related Measures Act. As a result of the current Provincial Health Order, individuals who choose to organize or attend this type gathering are in contravention of the COVID-19 Related Measures Act and can face fines between $230 and $2,300.

On  Dec. 23, the organizer, a 58-year-old female from Winlaw, BC, was issued a $2,300 Violation Ticket.

The public are being asked to ensure compliance of the British Columbia Public Health Order, specifically the COVID-19 Related Measures Act, and individuals who do not comply could face fines.
