"No Mask Flash Mob" in Trail a non-starter

Threats of an ant-masker flash mob in Trail appear to have been idle, as evidenced by the lack of activity police encountered.

“On Jan. 12, Trail and Greater District RCMP was notified about an online posting being disseminated through a social media network, which stated No Mask Flash Mob @ your local Walmart January 17, 2021 10:00 a.m.,” said Trail RCMP detachment commander Sgt. Mike Wicentowich. On Jan. 17, at around 9 a.m., front line Trail RCMP officers were present at the Walmart located in the 1600-block of Marcolin Drive in Trail, to keep the peace and ensure public safety, including the safety of those who planned to gather contrary to the Public Health Order.

While we certainly can, and will enforce the provisions available to us, we continue to encourage everyone to voluntarily comply with the provincial health orders, so enforcement is not required.

He said a 63-year-old Trail woman did enter the store without a mask, around the time of the proposed flash mob. Trail RCMP spoke to woman, and she agreed to leave the store without further incident.

The Trail RCMP did receive another call about an unknown man refusing to wear a mask inside the store; however, the man departed before police arrived.

We all have a key role to play during this health emergency, and there are many members of public respecting the prevention orders from the public health authorities that are not optional. Public safety is a priority for the RCMP and we encourage everyone to adhere to the orders being implemented to keep everyone safe and reduce the risks, Wicentowich added.

Anyone failing to wear a face covering can be issued a $230 fine under the Emergency Programs Act – Face Coverings (COVID-19) Order.
