On Sept. 12, 2023, at 9 a.m., a member of the public reported a small plane parked on the side of Hwy 6, near Salmo, according to RCMP Cpl. James Grandy.

“An officer with the BC Highway Patrol arrived and located the 1969 Lake Capithian single engine aircraft, pulled off to the side of the highway,” Grandy said in a press release Wednesday. “The pilot, who was close by, told the officer that the aircraft suffered a ‘catastrophic’ engine failure. The pilot made the decision to attempt an emergency landing along the stretch of highway.”

Grandy said the plane’s engine had notable damage, but the rest of the plane, and its pilot, were unharmed.

The plane was later towed from its resting place.

“RCMP have notified Navigation Canada of the incident, which appears mechanical.”
