Motor vehicle crash leads to significant drug seizure in Rossland

On Aug. 18, at 3:24 p.m., a frontline Trail and Greater District RCMP officer responded to a report of single motor vehicle incident on Hwy 3B near Rossland, according to RCMP Sgt. Mike Wicentowich.
He said a 42-year-old Warfield man and his passenger sustained injuries after the man crashed his vehicle on the highway. The vehicle was heavily damaged and the airbags deployed. Both he and his passenger were treated by BC EHS. Speed and the driver’s condition and attentiveness were believed to be factors in the crash.
“During the officer’s investigation, she located approximately 1.75 kilograms of a substance believed to be cocaine, $1,500, and cell phones inside the crashed vehicle,” Wicentowich said.
“The officer arrested the 42-year-old Warfield man for Possession of a Controlled Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking contrary to Section 5(2) of the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act. The man was released by the officer at scene. He and his passenger were transported to the Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital for additional medical treatment.”
The matter remains under investigation. The investigator will forward a report to Crown Counsel recommending criminal charges.
“Excellent work by our officer in this matter when seizing a significant quantity of drugs. The drugs are believed to be worth around $80,000.” Wicentowich said.
