Castlegar man taken into custody after weapons complaint
On Wednesday, Sept. 10, 2025, Castlegar RCMP received a report that male had pointed a loaded firearm at a female acquaintance while in a residence located in the 500 block of 201 Ave., south of Castlegar, according to Castlegar RCMP Sgt. Monty Taylor. Taylor said the victim and witness fled the residence, contacting police.
“Castlegar RCMP attended to the residence of the 44-year-old male, who was known to police and on court conditions to not possess firearms,” Taylor said. “To ensure public safety, police established a perimeter, closing the roadway. Police contacted the male over the phone, and the male subsequently exited the residence where he was taken into custody without incident.”
To further the investigation police obtained a search warrant for the residence for potential evidence Taylor added. He said during the search police located a loaded firearm, ammunition, a quantity of methamphetamine, fentanyl and cocaine, items consistent with trafficking, and Canadian currency.
“44-year-old Laurence Darren Charles McKay is currently charged with two counts of Fail to Comply with a Release Order and one count of Possessing a Weapon for a Dangerous Purpose.”
McKay appeared before the courts and has been held in custody to next appear in Castlegar court on Monday September 15, 2025.
Castlegar RCMP are continuing their investigation which will be forwarded to the Crown for a full criminal charge assessment.
