LETTER: Why are we bringing more fuel to the fires?

Dear Editor,
I am writing from indoors today because the wildfire smoke in the West Kootenays is once again at hazardous levels. Thousands across the province have been evacuated or are on alert. Hundreds of exhausted fire fighters continue to battle the flames in an attempt to save communities. Kids, adults and seniors are cloistered inside their homes amid record high temperatures because the alternative is migraines and aching lungs. And among all this, Danielle Smith and Mark Carney are planning to build a tax dollar funded pipeline to push even more carbon into the atmosphere. Doesn’t that sound crazy? I don’t think the profits to a few oil company shareholders are more important than clean air to breathe, do you?
If there was any doubt before this hellish fire season started in BC, surely we can all see now the new West Coast Pipeline is a deadly idea that must be stopped.
We must stop adding fuel to the fires and use this tax funded pipeline money to build a clean energy economy in Canada instead, one that can let us catch our breath and slow the accelating devastation of climate change in our province.
How many more summers like this can we take? We must demand leadership that puts human and ecological health first, not corporate oil profits.
