Oliver RCMP on hunt for vandals responsible for damaging Telus cellphone tower

RCMP released a photo of damaged cell phone tower atop Fairview Mountain West of Oliver B.C.

The South Okanagan experienced cellular and internet interruptions after vandals knocked down a Telus owned cellphone tower in Oliver (Thursday) March 17.

The damage now has Oliver RCMP investigating the willful damage.

The sole intent appears to be one of causing willful damage, as there is no evidence of theft of materials or equipment from the site," said RCMP Cpl. Dan Moskaluk.

This is a very serious incident which has caused cell phone and internet service interruptions for Telus subscribers in the Oliver area. The unnecessary outage could have negatively impacted someone’s attempts to contact emergency services.

Moskaluk said police was notified by Telus, that one of their cell towers had been damaged the afternoon of March 17, causing cellular and internet interruptions in the Oliver area.

Moskaluk said Telus reported back to the Oliver RCMP later that day, confirming that an unknown suspect(s) had knocked the 45 metres tower over, in an apparent effort to cause willful damage. The tower is located on Fairview Mountain West of Oliver.

Moskaluk said Oliver RCMP, assisted by the South Okanagan General Investigation Section, are currently investigating the crime and are seeking public assistance from anyone who may have information regarding this matter.

Persons with information are asked to contact the Oliver RCMP at 250-485-6220, or their local police services.
