One in custody, RCMP still seeking public info after Yew Street fire, e-comm 9-1-1 to respond to dispatch issues by end of week
A suspect is in custody, but police are still seeking public information, according to RCMP Cpl. Chris Manseau.
"On June 5, the Castlegar RCMP were called to assist other emergency response crews to a structure fire on Yew St in Castlegar BC.
"When RCMP frontline members arrived on scene two structures were fully engulfed in flames and was being tended to by the Castlegar Fire Department.
"The residents in one of the house advised the officers that there were no more people in the one residence and homeowners of the other were currently out.
"The Castlegar RCMP is currently working alongside fire investigators to determine exactly where and by what means the fire started. Preliminary investigation has revealed the fire to be suspicious in nature.
At this time the fire has been determined to be an arson, a suspect has been identified and arrested.
Manseau said. Video from the area has been obtained, and is being released in the hopes that witnesses or the public can further identify the person believed to be the suspect.
The Castlegar RCMP are requesting the public’s assistance for any additional video surveillance they may have from the area of Yew Street from 10 to 11a.m. Friday June 5.

In related news, some residents reported having to wait up to 20 minutes to speak to a dispatcher who could help, and a Source request to e-comm (9-1-1) is still in process.
e-comm Director of Corporate Communication Jasmine Bradley said they are looking into the issue, and promised a response by the end of the week.
