Update:

As an alleged gunman loose near Slocan was not apprehended during the night, the village remains locked down and the school evacuated as of 7:13 a.m., according to RCMP Const. Kris Clark.

“The serious public safety risk that prompted the lock-down and subsequent evacuation of the school remains and we continue to ask residents to stay indoors for their own safety,” he said. “We continue to assess the risk to public safety and commit to update the public when the situation changes.”

Story:

Police have ascertained the general location of an at-large gunman near Slocan and are evacuating homes in the area, according to RCMP Const. Kris Clark.

“Police have established an area of containment west of the village of Slocan in which the suspect is believed to be located and efforts are underway to evacuate homes within that zone,” he said in a release at 9 p.m. Thursday evening. “Due to the sensitive nature of our police operations, no further details can be provided.”

He said there have been no injuries to RCMP or members of the public.

“Adequate resources have responded and will continue to do so until the situation is resolved,” he said. “We would like to thank the citizens of Slocan for their assistance in this difficult time. Considering that an armed suspect remains at large, we must continue to ask residents to remain inside for their own safety.

“We continue to assess the risk to public safety and commit to update the public should the situation change or if we have further direction in the morning,” he said. “Anyone with specific information that can assist in locating the suspect are asked to call 9-1-1.”
