The RCMP Underwater Recovery Team will be in the Rossland reservoir this morning (Monday) searching for evidence in the unsolved murder of Tom Feeney last year.

RCMP Cpl. Dave Tyreman said the Southeast District Major Crime Unit believes there may be evidence in the reservoir,” he said, adding this may be more promising that it seems at first blush.

“Forensic science has come a long way,” he said. “I’m told there is a laser scanner that can detect fingerprints on items that have been submerged in water for up to two years.”

That being said, Tyreman said public input and information is still crucial to the investigation and urged anyone with even the slightest information to come forward.

“The thing that somebody thinks isn’t important, or that we must already know, so they haven’t reported it yet, please call us,” Tyreman added. “You never know, it could be the key piece of information we needed to break the whole thing wide open.”

On June 5, 2014 around 11 a.m. the Trail and Greater District RCMP Detachment received a report of a deceased person at a residence on Feeney Road near Rossland, B.C. The body was later identified as long-time local resident Tom Feeney.

The Team leader Sgt. Terry Jacklin of the Southeast Major Crime Unit added, Our preliminary findings suggested that this was a random incident, or a crime of opportunity that resulted in the tragic death of Mr. Feeney. From the time our boots hit the ground, this investigation has been active and ongoing. Our dedicated team of investigators is determined to solve the untimely death of Tom. The family deserves answers; they need to know exactly what happened and who is responsible.

The RCMP Southeast District Major Crime Unit with assistance from the Kootenay Boundary Regional General Investigation Section remain committed and ask that anyone with any information contact the Trail and Great District Detachment at 250-364-2566 or remain anonymous by calling Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or BCCrimstoppers.com.
