Prolific offenders arrested, police strongly caution against releasing them locally
Salmo police are concerned about the possibility of two prolific offenders being released back into the Salmo community – not just for the sake of residents, but for the sake of the offenders themselves, according to Salmo Top Cop Cpl. Darryl Orr.
“The Salmo RCMP are hopeful that these offenders will be detained in custody until trial. There is no doubt that the community of Salmo is safer because of the arrest of these offenders,” Orr said. “If they are to be released – which is not what we want – but if the courts were to release them, we believe it’s a risk to their safety to be released into the community of Salmo. Residents here know who they are, and we are concerned about vigilantism.”
This, after the two men were arrested on Sept. 7 on Salmo’s Main Street and remanded into custody until their court appearance today.
“Both are believed responsible for committing numerous property, drug and violent crimes in and around the Salmo community,” Orr said. “These offenders are also suspected of committing crimes in the Trail and Castlegar communities over the past 30 days.
“Bail hearings were conducted over the weekend by Salmo RCMP members and both offenders were remanded in custody for court today in Nelson, where they will be brought before a Provincial Court Judge.”
The Salmo RCMP have recommended numerous property and drug charges against these offenders.
Neither of the men appear to have any connections to local communities – not family, friends, jobs or residences.
Their names will not be released until after their first appearance in court today, in keeping with RCMP media policy.
