In an update Monday, BC Wildfire Services said the Talbot Creek wildfire has grown to an estimated 1,000 hectares, and heavy smoke blanketing the region is preventing helicopters from flying until conditions improve.

“Smoke is expected to remain in the area for several days and could continue to limit suppression options. However, the smoke may also reduce the temperature and increase humidity in the area, which could lead to reduced fire activity,” the update said. “Crews continue working in areas that are accessible by ground, cooling hot spots on south and west flanks of the fire. A hose lay is being constructed along a contingency line north of the fire.

“Structure protection units have been deployed along Slocan River Road. Three, 20-person unit crews are working in this area today, they are also constructing a fuel free northeast from Natlamp Road.

“The fire has grown significantly to the north and is spreading down-slope towards to the south end of Lower Little Slocan Lake. Fire growth has also been observed along the ridge on the eastern edge of the fire. Fire spots have been observed at high elevations to the west of Draw Creek. “

An evacuation alert remains in place for nearby properties.

In the interest of safety, the public is being asked not to stop or slow on highway 6 or the Slocan river road to take photos of the fire. As both roads are narrow, slowing and stopping traffic can create significant safety hazards. We thank residents and visitors for their continued support and cooperation in this matter.
