Talbot Creek fire grows to 1,302 hectares, evacuation alerts reduced
A lightning-caused wildfire discovered a week ago in the Slocan Valley (roughly 30 km north of Castlegar) has grown to 1,302 hectares, but is not threatening and homes or structures, according to a BC Wildfire Services update Monday morning.
“Helicopters bucketing operations continue to action hot spots on the east flank where the terrain is inaccessible and will start supporting ground crews on the northwest side,” the update said. “Any fire growth continues to be on the northeast flank. Crews are seeking hot-spots on the southwest edge of the fire and from McFayden Creek moving eastward. A map is available here. The hose lay and sprinklers in the Tedesco Road area on the north flank of the fire are being maintained. Firefighters are suppressing the fire in this area using water and hand tools. Structure protection units have been installed along Slocan River Road and are being maintained. A map of forecast smoke is available at firesmoke.ca “
The update said 109 firefighters, six helicopters and eight heavy equipment machines are tackling the blaze.
“On Monday, expect slightly milder and drier conditions than Sunday with similar or slightly greater southerly or southerly winds in the afternoon (6-15 km per hour). A slow-moving Pacific system is pushing inland and should bring an increase of winds and thickening clouds ahead of expected rain on Wednesday.”
On Sept. 18, the Regional District of Central Kootenay further reduced the evacuation alert area for the Talbott Creek wildfire. Visit rdck.ca for more information.
