RCMP said in a media release Monday, that criminal charges have now been approved by the BC Prosecution Service against a Castlegar man accused of robbing a local convenience store Sunday evening.

RCMP said on April 11, 2021 shortly after 10 p.m., front line RCMP officers responded to a report of a robbery just committed at the 7-Eleven convenience store situated in the 1900-block of Columbia Avenue in Castlegar.

Police were told that that suspect, who had previously been identified as a shoplifter, re-entered the business after being told by staff he was not welcome.

“Instead of leaving the store as requested, the suspect allegedly walked behind the counter and confronted the employees with a knife and demanded money,” said Sgt. Monty Taylor, Detachment Commander for the Castlegar RCMP Detachment.

“The suspect obtained a small undisclosed amount of currency and fled the store on foot.”

Castlegar RCMP attended and located a man, matching the suspect’s description, a short distance away.

RCMP said upon the man’s arrest police recovered suspected stolen merchandise, cash and seized a knife.

RCMP said Jonathan O’Rourke, a 29-year-old Castlegar man, has been formally charged with robbery and theft under $5,000.

O’Rourke appeared before the provincial courts on April 12, 2021. He was released from custody on bail conditions to abide by while awaiting his next scheduled court appearance in Castlegar Provincial Court on May 5, 2021.
