The saga of the City Centre Motel continues, as city council last night approved a recommendation that the city ask the B.C. Supreme Court for a stop-work order to prevent the motel owners from undertaking work without appropriate permits.

City director of planning and development Phil Markin said the owners have apparently gutted one building on the site and have undertaken some re-roofing …without having first applied for permits to do so.

“This is what we need to do to advance this entire issue,” said city councillor Kirk Duff, referring to a larger case in which the city has declared the site unsafe and is planning to demolish the buildings, located downtown at 1101 2 Street, at the owners’ expense.

The court has since granted owner Susan McLaren a judicial review of the case, which is scheduled to take place during the week of Sept. 7.

The owners have not returned repeated calls from the Castlegar Source.
