Grease is the word in Castlegar this month as the Castlegar Community Services Society (CCSS) hosts a sing-along showing of a now-classic popular musical movie.

Julie Leffelaar, CCSS board member and event organizer, said the ever-popular movie Grease, starring Olivia Newton John and John Travolta, will be ever-so-much more fun watched the CCSS way, as attendees will be encouraged to come in costume, sing along, dance, and generally have a terrific time.

“Mountain FM’s Glenn Hicks will be the emcee, and he’ll be getting the crowd to boo and hiss at the bad guys, blow bubbles during Beauty School Drop-out, join Sandi in her first cigarette (using candy cigs, of course),” she said. “We’re even hoping we’ll be able to have a photography booth like in fairs and carnivals, where you can dress up in period clothes and have your picture taken.”

A couple of group dance lessons will see the crowd learn the hand-jive, along with other iconic Grease moves, and there’ll be a beer-and-wine table, along with other refreshments, to keep energy levels up for this participatory evening event.

Local ’50s and ’60s buff Dwayne Mills will handle the decorations for an authentic period flavour … and all proceeds will go to the CCSS, to support the spectrum of services they offer, from counselling and violence intervention to rides for seniors to medical appointment, to families and individuals in the Castlegar area.

“We’re holding it in the ballroom at the Sandman – they were our first sponsors, giving us such a wonderful location to stage all this,” Leffelaar said. “But we’re only going to be able to fit about 300 people in there, so you’ll want to get your tickets early.”

The event is slated for Jan. 22 at 7 p.m.

Tickets will sell for $15 each and are available at CCSS offices, the Sandman and Avenues Hair Design. For more information, call CCSS at 250-365-2104.
